At an event in the UK overnight, HMD Global has unveiled their latest Nokia handset, the Nokia 7.1 bringing with it a new PureDisplay and a premium design.
The Nokia 7.1 is their first to introduce PureDisplay screen technology on their 5.84″ Full-HD+ resolution screen, an option which brings HDR10 support to the Nokia family. PureDisplay is in response to the growing support for HDR10 across streaming video services such as YouTube, Netflix and Amazon Prime, offering what Nokia says will ‘take your viewing experience to another level with higher contrast and great clarity’.
The Nokia 7.1 features a premium design as befits the Nokia 7-series handsets, with dual-anodised aluminium diamond cut coloured edges and glass on the front and rear for a high quality finish.
Underneath the Nokia 7.1 is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 SoC with options for either 3GB or 4GB of RAM and options for either 32GB or 64GB of onboard storage (with microSD card expansion). A 3,060 mAh battery should offer all day use, and you can charge through the USB-C port.
Nokia has a history with high-quality optics on their cameras, and the Nokia 7.1 is no different using Carl Zeiss optics on the dual rear camera array that consists of a 12MP sensor with f/1.8 aperture and 5MP B/W sensor. An 8MP front-facing camera behind an f/2.0 aperture lens should allow for a great selfie when required.
Nokia is offering their Pro UI camera mode on the Nokia 7.1 allowing you to get full control of your shot including controlling optional manual control of white balance, ISO, aperture and shutter speed. There’s also dual-sight in there as well, allowing you to add ‘3D personas, masks and filters in Dual-Sight mode. Then live stream your #bothies in real time to Facebook or YouTube directly from the camera app’.

The Nokia 7.1 will run Android One on the phone, with Android 8.1 Oreo out of the box with a promise of Android 9.0 (Pie) coming soon – just one of the bonuses of Android One.
In terms of availability, Nokia has only released information for select markets, with the phone launching in Gloss Midnight Blue and Gloss Steel colour options in either 3GB/32GB and 4GB/64GB. In terms of pricing, the 3GB/32GB will be priced at 319€ (about $519AUD), while the 4GB/64GB model will retail for 349€ (around $568AUD).
Update:Great News! HMD Global have advised the Nokia 7.1 is heading to Australia on October 17. It’s not only being sold outright, HMD Global will also be releasing the Nokia 7.1 on the JB Hi-Fi sim-only mobile plans. Available in Gloss Midnight Blue, the Nokia 7.1 launches into retail on Wednesday 17th October for $499 at JB Hi-Fi and Harvey Norman, or $199 on JB Hi-Fi’s $65 BYO plan.
The Nokia Australia site only lists the 32gb/3gb ram version of the 7.1

$499 looks like it’ll be for 3gb/32gb ram.
Looking at the specs for the 7.1, apart from the Snapdragon 636, notch and (presumably) display quality, the other specs all look like a step backwards from the 7 Plus. Even the size of the handset is smaller. I’d probably lean more towards the 7 Plus unless screen real-estate is that essential in your life.

Compared to what Motorola just release this thing is a bargain and deserves to be a success.
Quick question – does this phone get the $300 discount for signing up to the JBhifi plan you talked about last week?
Is the $499 price for the 3GB/32GB or 4GB/64GB?
Does it have a little light on the front for notifications when the screen is off? and is it certified water resistant to any IP ratings?
No IP rating, and no notification LED unfortunately.
Wish Telstra would sell these on contract. Maybe they dont like offering phones worth less than a grand or something. Would be nice to have a quality cheaper alternative…
The JB Hifi SIM-only plans are actually Telstra contacts. It’s a weird relationship these new JB plans, they’re not technically an MVNO, but the plans JB are offering are exclusive to them.
Nokia launched too many phones in a matter of 2 years, you can justify buying 1 when you know they are going to launch another one that is an upgrade or similar in a few months…

True, but there’s a point you have to bite the bullet and be happy with the one you purchased.
Essentially, Nokia is following a Samsung business plan of flooding the market with so many different phones and variations that to try and keep up is near impossible.
