After being rumoured to be halting work on their second phone back in May, a new report is today stating that Andy Rubin’s company Essential, is again working on a new phone but this time with a heavy Artificial Intelligence (AI) focus.
According to Bloomberg, the company has stopped working on their AI based home hub device in favour of a new AI focused phone. According to Bloomberg, the new design ‘isn’t like a standard smartphone. It would have a small screen and require users to interact mainly using voice commands, in concert with Essential’s artificial-intelligence software’.
The new phones AI would be able to perform many tasks as though it were the user, including ‘book appointments or respond to emails and text messages on its own’.
Essential proved they had an excellent hardware design on their hands with the PH1 which ran stock Android, allowing them to be the first non-Google phone to receive the Android Pie update in August when it was released. A change to a more modified software load would possibly interfere with this ability to provide fast updates.
If this new phone sounds intriguing we may not have long to wait, with Bloombergs source saying that the ‘company may show off the device to industry partners as soon as January at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas’.
