Wireless coverage mapping service Open Signal has today published their third annual Australian State of Mobile Network report, showing some notable statistics about the status of our 4G network.
The report is based on the period between July 1st to September 28th with over 31 thousand devices taking part offering over 425 million measurements. The measurements were taken through the Open Signal app which is available for both Android and iOS, allowing Open Signal to gather metrics from a broad range of users across our country.
The report covers a number of metrics including both 4G and 3G download speeds, 4G upload speeds, latency and availability, with all three Australian Telcos highlighting great parts of their networks. The results are close, however there are clear winners in almost all categories.
Telstra score highly on the 4G Download and Upload tests with a 40.11Mbps average download speed and 10.82Mbps while Optus scored well with 37.86Mbps (Down) and 7.72Mbps (Up) and Vodafone also did well with 37.58Mbps (Down) and 8.66Mbps (Up). Optus scored highly on the 3G download test with 7.08Mbps, though Vodafone showed well with 6.07Mbps and Telstra users averaged 5.48Mbps.
Optus is the sole winner of the 4G availability metric, with users able to access an LTE signal on the Optus 4G Plus network 90.5% of the time, though Vodafone and Telstra were close behind at 88.48% and 88.06% of the time.
Overall, according to Open Signal the ‘mobile broadband future of Australia looks bright’ and the expectation is that we’ll see both Optus and Vodafone top 90% availability in the near future. You can check out the full report on the Open Signal website.
