Samsung have never had great charging speeds and ever since the Galaxy Note 7 mishap have been gun shy about speeding up their fast charging. Most other companies have had faster charging than Samsung in their flagship devices but that could be set to change this year after Samsung’s announcement overnight.
Samsung have announced two new USB Type-C power delivery (PD) controllers, the SE8A and MM101, which can both communicate with the device to deliver optimum power amounts for more efficient charging of the device. Both chips have eFlash built in giving them the ability to have their firmware updated in the future with new specifications etc. The SE8A will also support Type-C authentication preventing unauthorised products from using the full specifications of the charger.
The two new PD chips can deliver up to 100W (20V / 5A) of power while meeting USB specifications for fast charging — USB-PD 3.0. Not only that but one of the chips also has an embedded Secure Element and the other supports AES. Ben K. Hur, Senior VP at Samsung Electronics, has said:
In addition to smarter features and larger batteries, innovative charging solutions allow us to do more through our mobile devices today. Following this trend, power adapters that can quickly charge devices while establishing safeguards against unauthorized access are increasingly in demand.
Samsung’s power delivery MM101 and security-enhanced SE8A will not only make charging faster and safer but also enable new services that can enrich tomorrow’s mobile experiences.
Samsung stated that the support for 100W capacity with these controllers can be used “for a variety of devices other than smartphones such as tablets, laptops and monitors”. As such I doubt very seriously that they would use the full 100W experience in the Note 10 — they do not want a repeat of the Note 7 fiasco.
Expect to see the 100W PD charging in larger products made by Samsung later this year with the SE8A already in mass production. What do you want to see charged at 100W PD in your kit bag?

Non replaceable battery = buy new phone
Stop glamourizing a battery charging 20 minutes faster for a second and consider what you’re giving up for it.
I look at this and I see something more annoying. Manufacturer lock-in for chargers.
Wonder how long it will be, before we see ‘security’ chipped cables from Samsung, with chargers refusing to work with unauthorized and/or unchipped, cables.
