Samsung has today confirmed that it will re-launch the Galaxy Fold in September in selected markets, as it concludes final product tests to make sure the Fold is ready for consumers.
Earlier this year, Samsung announced the Galaxy Fold to much fanfare, however once early units got into the hands of reviewers, it became quickly apparent that the phone wasn’t quite ready for a widespread release – the screen laminate came away a bit easily which led to people trying to peel it off, thinking it was a screen protector. This, in turn, destroyed the phone.
Samsung has made a number of changes to the Galaxy Fold design to strengthen the design, and ensure it’s robust enough to satisfy customer expectations:
- The top protective layer of the Infinity Flex Display has been extended beyond the bezel, making it apparent that it is an integral part of the display structure and not meant to be removed.
- Galaxy Fold features additional reinforcements to better protect the device from external particles while maintaining its signature foldable experience:
- The top and bottom of the hinge area have been strengthened with newly added protection caps.
- Additional metal layers underneath the Infinity Flex Display have been included to reinforce the protection of the display.
- The space between the hinge and body of Galaxy Fold has been reduced.
It’s not just hardware improvements though. Samsung has been hard at work refining the user experience, optimising more apps for the unique foldable display.
A Samsung spokesperson told Ausdroid this morning that the company appreciates customers’ patience around the re-launch of the Fold, and looks forward to showing off the phone to customers in the coming months.
