Samsung may have lost their way with their smartphone photography for a couple of years but have crawled back to the top of the heap with their latest phones this year. One thing for certain though is they never lost their way with their displays.

The Display

Samsung AMOLED displays have always been ranked the best with many manufacturers using their displays in their own smartphones. It seems though that once again Samsung themselves have used their own display to be rated the best smartphone display on the market.

Overnight DisplayMate have released their display review for the Galaxy Note 10+ 5G — of course they used the best possible Note 10 line — and the results were as expected.

In the process of the review the Galaxy Note10+ obtained several records including:

  • Very High Absolute Color Accuracy (0.4 JNCD) that is Visually Indistinguishable From Perfect
  • Record Very High Image Contrast Accuracy and Intensity Scale Accuracy that is Visually Indistinguishable From Perfect
  • Record High Brightness Mode that is up to 25% Brighter (1,308 nits) than the Galaxy Note9 in High Ambient Light
  • Record Peak Luminance, Color Accuracy and Intensity Scales that are Independent of the on-screen image content
  • Record Setting Galaxy Note10+ sets or matches 13 Smartphone Display Performance Records, earning DisplayMate’s highest ever A+ grade

The display was seen to be a “significant improvement” over the Note9 display with a 25% brightness increase providing a “much higher screen visibility and readability in high ambient light”. Overall the picture quality and colour accuracy were improved once again giving the near perfect result for the Note10+ 5G.

The DisplayMate conclusion was:

The Galaxy Note10+ has a very impressive Top Tier Smartphone Display with close to Text Book Perfect Calibration Accuracy and Performance that is Visually Indistinguishable From Perfect. Based on our extensive Lab Tests and Measurements the Galaxy Note10+ receives a DisplayMate Best Smartphone Display Award earning DisplayMate’s highest ever Display Performance Grade of A+ and setting or matching over 13 Smartphone Display Performance Records

The Camera

Of course, aside from the display, the other thing that people want to know about is the camera and after the Galaxy S10 5G performed to be rated the best smartphone camera Samsung have improved it even more. DxOMark also released their review of the Galaxy Note10+ 5G overnight and gave it the highest rating for any smartphone camera, for both front and rear cameras.

DxOMark found that the Note10+ 5G’s photo score of 118 was second best behind the Huawei P30 Pro but the video score was enough for it to pull ahead of the P30 Pro in overall score. DxOMark note that the hardware improvements that Samsung have made with the Note10+ 5G has allowed it to improve upon the already excellent performance of high-end premium Samsung smartphones.

An excellent performance across the board means that whether you’re shooting photos or videos, you can be confident of getting outstanding results from Samsung’s latest flagship device. While the scores are broadly similar to its stablemate Galaxy S10 5G, some fine-tuning of the processing algorithms has improved on the excellent image quality previously observed on Samsung premium devices. The Note 10+ 5G’s combination of excellent exposure, color, detail and bokeh for stills, together with excellent all round video, means that it steals the top-spot spoils from the Huawei P30 Pro for now.

So it seems that Samsung have hit the ball out of the park when it comes to two of the main features that people look for in a smartphone — the camera and the display. At this stage those two features are apparently unmatched on any other smartphone but with more phones set to be released very soon it may not last long.

What do you think of the Samsung Galaxy Note10+? Are the results above enough to sway you into purchasing or recommending one?
