OnePlus are making a splash lately with their innovative camera system and their new 120Hz display. Overnight they have mentioned both and the news is good.
OnePlus CEO, Pete Lau, took to Twitter to show off the new 120Hz Fluid Display in an official video comparing it to a standard 60Hz display. He states that the scrolling experience will be the “smoothest” on any smartphone, ever. Seems a big statement considering they aren’t the first with a 120Hz display — we suspect their animations will be the difference if this statement is indeed true.

The video shows that there is a large difference between the 60Hz display and the 120Hz display and having used both in recent times I can confirm that this difference is definitely something you can easily discern in real world usage.
With Samsung set to bring a 120Hz display to their Galaxy S20 series in just a few short weeks OnePlus is putting that seed into everyone’s head that their 2020 flagship will also have a 120Hz display but it will be better. When the OnePlus is not releasing until May they do need to try and stay in people’s minds through the entire Samsung advertising blitz.
Pete Lau was also recently on the Vergecast podcast and confirmed that the disappearing rear camera system will definitely make it into a production phone in the future. When that is expected to happen was not mentioned but he did say that it was close. It would not surprise us if it did make it into the OnePlus 8T Pro later in the year, but definitely for next year’s flagship.
Just when we thought smartphone innovation was dead or dying along comes something new. 2020 is shaping up to be an exciting year — hopefully we will see a lot of these new innovations in smartphones this year. What are you hoping to see this year?
