Recently it has been shown that using OnePlus’ colour filter camera lens and the Photochrome colour mode on the OnePlus 8 Pro allows users to “see through” objects allowing visualisation of the internals of certain structures.
The way it worked was using the infrared light of the colour filter lens to penetrate certain materials that normal light cannot — mostly plastics. This infrared vision combined with visible light allowed for a great party trick. We tested it out on our OnePlus 8 Pro (review inbound in a couple of days) and it worked best on plastics such as black drink bottles, some remote controls — it did not work on my Hades Canyon NUC.
Unfortunately that party trick is no more — for now. Yesterday OnePlus “inadvertently” sent out an update to disable the photochome filter in the camera. The update was meant for Hydrogen OS based phones only (Chinese) but was somehow sent out to a host of OnePlus 8 Pro devices as well — the Ausdroid one received said update as well unfortunately.
In a statement provided to Android Police OnePlus have said they will re-enable this in the future:
“This OTA inadvertently went out to a limited number of devices. We will re-enable that filter in the next OTA.”
We do not know if they have stopped the update from rolling out but we do know that they will re-enable it in the future. What functionality it retains remains to be seen but we suspect the fun could be over.
