After a launch early this year Huawei has announced that their latest flagship the Huawei Mate P40 Pro+ will be available in Australia. Retail units went on sale Friday 7 August both in store and online.

Huawei is leaning heavily on their well earned photography street cred pitching this as the next evolution in their award winning line of smartphones. Huawei’s photography pedigree is undeniable with their devices routinely performing at the top of the smartphone pack, and of course there’s 5G along for the ride.

The 6.58 inch 2640 x 1200 resolution OLED display has a 90Hz refresh rate bringing that ultra smooth look and feel that is the hallmark of the 2020 flagship. Inside it is powered by a HUAWEI Kirin 990 5G Octa-core SOC paired with 8GB of RAM and 512GB of internal storage.

Of course it’s the cameras that really shine with this device with five cameras in total, a 50MP f/1.9 Wide Angle + 40MP f/1.8 Ultra-wide angle + 8MP f/4.4 10x Zoom + 8MP telephoto f/2.4 3x Zoom + a 3D depth sensing camera. Around the front there’s a dual array with a 32MP f/2.2 and a depth sensor as well.

Supporting all of that is a 4200mAh internal battery with up to 40W charging via USB-C using Huawei SuperCharge as well as Wireless charging also up to 40W again utilising proprietary Huawei charging equipment. Inside there’s WiFi 6, Bluetooth 5.1, NFC but no headphone jack.

All of this is running atop of Huaweis flavour of Android 10, EMUI 10.1. Of course we have to mention that because of the ongoing political/ trade dispute between Trump and China this device is running Huawei’s App Gallery instead of Google Play Services, what does that mean? For many people it will mean apps and services you’re used to using simply wont be available.

The Huawei P40 Pro+ is available now for $2099 in ceramic white from Huawei and Mobileciti and as an early order bonus those who buy the P40 Pro+ from participating stores will get a bonus Huawei Watch GT 2e valued at $349 included.

No google services lol. Kinda pointless imo, becomes an expensive paperweight lol.

Given the issues with the app store, you’d be better off spending that money on a nice mirrorless camera. 🙁
