When Google first announced the multi-device audio, or group casting, was coming to the then ChromeCast standard, now know as Google Cast, only the official Google Chromecasts had that functionality. For almost a year we have waited for the feature to expand into the broader ecosystem.
At CES this year it was confirmed the feature would be “available in the future”. Well, it seems we are now living in the future. Sony has released a firmware update today that upgrades the Sony X99, X88 and X77 GoogleCast enabled speakers to include Group casting, Hi-F- Audio at 96KHz 24-bit.
If you have the Sony X99, 88 or 77 you can head on over to Sony and grab the firmware download. If you have a Google Cast speaker from another OEM, then it may be time to start asking when your update is coming.
We’re glad to see the extended Google Cast functionality rolling out and we’ll be keeping an eye on as this develops.
