Made up of ex-Nokia employees Finnish mobile company Jolla has today announced that their tablet, running Sailfish OS, a gesture based OS that can run native Sailfish apps or Android apps, has now gone up for pre-order.
The tablet itself has been in development for some time, with Jolla showing it off at Mobile World Congress earlier this year. The tablet is now ready for the big time with pre-orders now being accepted for the 32GB or 64GB models, with Jolla offering shipping to a variety of countries including countries in the EU, Norway, Switzerland, United States, Canada, India, Hong Kong and of course Australia.
The tablet itself is fairly well specced, with a 2048×1536 resolution 7.85″ IPS display with 330PPI, and is powered by a 1.8 GHz Quad Core Intel Baytrail processor with 2GB RAM. The tablet comes with 32GB or 64GB of internal storage though there is a microSD card slot to add more memory and to round out the specs, a 5MP rear camera and 2MP camera will allow you to commit all sorts of mobile photography faux pas at events.
The tablet is shipping to Australia ex-VAT, with the 32GB tablet available for €215.32 (around $328AUD) and the 64GB tablet selling for €241.13 (around $368AUD). Shipping to Australia is surprisingly economical with an additional €16.13 getting you courier delivery with tracking arriving between 5-7 business days later.
The tablet is expected to begin shipping in October, so if you want to try out another mobile OS but with the comfort of having limited Android App support this isn’t a bad unit. There’s no Google Play Services included, but it’s always good to try new things.
That’s a pretty intriguing option to replace my aging Nexus 7 (2012).
