Google’s AI powered camera announced in October last year has finally gone on-sale in the US, though it’s not expected to be made available in Australia.
The camera sells for $249 through the Google Store in the US, with shipping beginning in late February if you want to pay for premium shipping, or in early March using the free shipping method. The lightweight (60.5 gram)camera has 16GB of on-board storage, storing photos taken behind a 130-degree field of view lens, with up to 7 second video clips (with no sound) at 15fps captured as well.
The camera uses completely local machine learning to work out the best time to take a photo or short video clip which can then be downloaded from the clip on camera as required. Google has spoken about the production of the camera, and pairing up with ‘a documentary filmmaker, a photojournalist, and a fine arts photographer’ to work out exactly what makes a ‘memorable moment’ on their Design Blog.
It’s a high price to pay for a camera which has no shutter button. Google recognises that it’s a long shot, limiting sales to the US-only with no announcements being made about expanded international availability.
