Google announced the education focused Expeditions as a Virtual Reality (VR) experience back at Google I/O in 2015, before following up with an Augmented Reality (AR) version at Google I/O last year. The AR Expeditions experience has expanded today to anyone via the Google Expeditions app on both Android and iOS.
The AR Expeditions app utilises ARCore for Android, and ARKit for iOS devices, with more than 100 AR and 800 VR tours included. The experiences in the app have been created by Google Arts & Culture partners including the ‘Smithsonian Freer|Sackler, Museo Dolores Olmedo, and Smarthistory, as well as pedagogical partners like Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, Hodder Education a division of Hachette, Oxford University Press and Aquila Education’.
The kit for using the AR Expeditions is decent, but you can find a Google Partner supplying Google Expeditons kits for educational institutions here in Australia. At this stage TFE Solutions is the only place here in Australia supplying fully formed solutions.
After trying out the AR Expeditions last year I can highly recommend it. If you have the required hardware you can try it out for yourself.
