File this story under “amazing they haven’t already done it”. With the resurgence of the slider form factor, it seems Huawei might be preparing to enter the fray if a newly lodged WIPO patent application is any indication.
Sliding smartphones have undergone a bit of a renaissance in popularity – at least with manufacturers – as they explore ways to provide more “full” on the “full screen” specification and as an alternative to “notched” displays.
Huawei’s patent application doesn’t necessarily reveal anything new in the category, though. The unnamed phone is pretty generic, and its slider mechanism reveals two front-facing cameras – not, you would expect, something that warrants a separate patent application.
LetsGoDigital has a PDF copy of the WIPO application here, and commissioned some 3D renders based on the information in the patent, presented below.
It seems unlikely this patent would affect the assumed-upcoming P30 or Mate 30 phones. Maybe we’ll see a sliding Nova phone sometime in the future, though?
