At MWC this year HTC unveiled their 5G Mobile Smart Hub, a device with 5G hotspot wireless connectivity for to up to 20 users. We have not heard any more details on it since then but overnight a HTC device was spotted on the Bluetooth SIG website which is most likely the 5G hub, suggesting its release is imminient.
HTC have stopped manufacturing smartphones for now (but for how long we do not know) and instead are concentrating on other areas of their business with one being the 5G smart hub. A product with the name “2Q6UXXX” has passed certification on the Bluetooth SIG site and with the design description being a “Mobile AP support Bluetooth Function” we suspect that the device is actually the 5G smart hub.
Others have suggested it could be the next “U” phone from HTC but with HTC telling all that they have stopped making smartphones for now, and that they have this hub set to be released in the next couple of months, along with the description (mobile AP) gives us a fair idea of what it is.
What does this mean for us though? In Australia, Telstra have over 200 5G towers ready to go but not a single 5G device ready to take advantage of the network just yet. Phone manufacturers Samsung, OPPO and LG are racing to have their 5G phones ready to release but Telstra have told us previously that they suspect the HTC Smart Hub will be ready first.
Telstra want, and expect, to have 5G devices ready to go in this quarter and as soon as they are ready they will be released into the marketplace. Devices usually get these sorts of certification just before release and as such we believe that the HTC Mobile Smart Hub release is imminent.
