It has hardly been a well-kept secret but OnePlus have today announced a new affordable smartphone series. The new product line is designed to be a “really solid” smartphone that meets everyday needs for a “more accessible price”.

Although OnePlus did not name the actual product line in their announcement it is expected to be the OnePlus Z or the OnePlus Nord that we have seen leaked for a while now. The new line up is an admission that their flagships are no longer in the “affordable” category for many people — but then sometimes if you want the best hardware you have to pay for it, that stuff isn’t free.

The first device in the line up, the rumoured OnePlus Z, is expected to arrive with mid-range specs such as a 6.55-inch 90Hz AMOLED display, a Snapdragon 765 chipset with a moderate 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. The battery is expected to still be a decent 4,300mAh and the rear camera a triple camera system.

As they have done for many of their new phones over the years the launch is aimed specifically at India and Europe at first. Although not stating that the first device will arrive in the US CEO Pete Lau said that they will “bring more affordable smartphones to North America in the near future as well”.

OnePlus promise that the same experience you receive from their flagships will be also received when using these new devices. We have no reason to doubt this given the amazing, second-to-none experience they offer on their flagships. These days there is not that much difference between a SD765 and a SD865 — hence why Google is going with the SD765 in the Pixel 5.

If you are interested in keeping up with the developments of the new line up they have a dedicated Instagram page for it. Some hints have pointed to at least two new devices in the upcoming series — maybe this will be the time for OnePlus to test their toes in the Australian market (again), although the mid-range is becoming extremely crowded.

Keep an eye out for updates in the coming days and weeks if you are interested. A show of hands, who here is interested in a mid-range OnePlus smartphone?

I would be interested if they sold here.

Why are you persisting with giving OnePlus free advertising, when they still refuse to sell here?

I’d certainly be interested in a OnePlus midrange. Always grappling for the best bang for buck in the regularly updated solid clean-Android space (Nokia/Pixel/MotoG). Coming from a Pixel 1.

Id be interested if they had something like a good quality 1080p LCD screen as I like to heavily use phones and use them for more than 2 years
