Optus has today announced that their 3x Carrier Aggregation technology has been switched on for users in the Melbourne CBD ahead of the launch of the Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 Edge+ this week.
The 3x Carrier Aggregation, marries 15MHz of their Frequency-Division Duplexing (FDD) 1800MHz LTE network as well as two 20MHz banks in their 2300MHz Time-Division Duplexing (TDD) LTE network to deliver the 3x aggregation. This Cat 9 LTE technology is supported by both the Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 Edge+ out of the box, so customers will be able to experience super fast downloads in the Melbourne CBD when they pick up their new phone.
Ben White, Vice President of Mobile Marketing, Optus, spoke about the update
This means Optus customers with a compatible category 9 device can expect faster downloads while wandering through Federation Square, enjoying a feed in Flinders Lane or relaxing at Flagstaff Gardens.
Optus switched on 3x Carrier Aggregation in Newcastle last month and intends to roll it out further. The plan is to begin offering it in the Sydney CBD early next year, while Brisbane and Adelaide will both see 3x Carrier Aggregation begin in their market mid next year.
If you’re going to grab a Galaxy S6 Edge+ or Galaxy Note 5 from Optus and you’re in Melbourne or Newcastle regions covered by the service, send us a speed test and let us know what you think.
What if I’m with Virgin Mobile?
Well assuming the obvious it should also include Virgin. As they are under the exact same network with equal coverage.

why does sydney have to wait so long to get it
Do sites simply need a software upgrade or configuration, or does hardware need to be added? I’m wondering why it’s rolled out so slowly when I imagine the hardware would’ve been installed when the band 28 upgrades took place.
