We’ve reviewed a few cheap handsets in the past, and while they don’t always get a good wrap, we certainly can’t discount their importance in making Android more accessible to everyone, especially to those people who can’t (or don’t want to) splash out for an expensive smartphone.

When we were tipped by Alex earlier, we couldn’t believe what we’d seen — a sub-$50 Android powered handset.

The Telstra Prepaid Uno T12 might not be the world’s most feature rich phone. In fact, it definitely isn’t. However, what it is is a ridiculously cheap handset with reasonable specs:

  • Android 2.3 Gingerbread
  • 2.8-inch touch screen
  • 2 megapixel camera
  • Expandable memory – up to 32GB

It looks something akin to the Huawei IDEOS (which we reviewed a couple of years ago), but with newer software. At $44.50 to buy in to the Android market, we might just buy one of these and review it for your pleasure, because we know that for some of you, this represents a genuine option.

You can get your own Prepaid Uno tomorrow (Wed September 12) from Coles.

If the battery is a decent size this would make a better mobile wifi device than the ones telstra sell that run out of battery in 3 hours. Assuming the hotspot functionality hasn’t been removed.

I’ve got an LG Optimus Spirit which is a Telstra locked prepaid android phone I picked up from coles for $50 during a recent sale. Coles is great for cheap phones 🙂
