Android One handsets are only just arriving into the market place in India (and onto the Ausdroid review bench), but with kernel source available for the platform, it was only a matter of time before someone managed to unlock, install a custom recovery and get root access to the phones. All that is now possible, thanks to the devs at XDA-Developers for anyone wanting to have a play with their Android One handset.
XDA-Developer varun.chitre15 has managed to port ClockworkMod recovery to the Karbonn, Spice and Micromax, Android One handsets, and you can find them all in the XDA thread here. You will of course need to unlock your bootloader, but it’s as simple as a Nexus device with the magical fastboot command ‘fastboot OEM unlock’ all that is needed.
The SuperSU file is available in another thread, as are instructions on sideloading the file using ‘adb sideload’.
It seems fairly simple, as was expected for something that’s essentially a low-end Nexus device. Can’t wait to see what developers can do with an unlocked Android One.
