While Motorola’s current flagship phone the Moto X (2014) has received the Android 5.0 Lollipop update, users of earlier Motorola handsets aren’t exactly feeling the love just yet.
However, Motorola software engineer Luciano Carvalho has taken to Google+ to shed a little bit of light on what’s been happening with the Lollipop updates and the rollout to the range of 2013 and 2014 handsets from Motorola. In short, Luciano has promised the update will be arriving “really soon” but they want to make sure that the bugs and issues which have affected the early Lollipop releases are fixed before rolling the update out to everyone. Limited soak tests (i.e. to a small set of users) have been done for Android 5.0.2, and a broader rollout should follow soon after assuming there are no issues.
Luciano has also pointed out that users of earlier Motorola devices (he didn’t list which ones) should install the Motorola Update Services app on the device to make sure that everything is up to date and ready for a potential Lollipop rollout down the track.
Exactly which devices will receive Lollipop and when remain unclear, however it seems to be a safe bet that the list will include the Moto G and Moto G (2014) as well as the 2013 Moto X, maybe the Moto E lineup, and perhaps going back a little earlier still. Time will tell.

Motorola are becoming like the boy who cried wolf. I’ll believe when I see it.
+1. When I bought my wife’s Moto G 4G several weeks ago, I was expecting to receive the Lollipop update by late 2014 at the latest. Motorola is losing its reputation for fast updates when phones such as LG’s G3 have been running Lollipop for weeks.
Lollipop 5.0.0 was buggy. That’s the simple truth. It’s not Motorola’s fault. All the major OEMs promised a fast rollout, and most of them have stalled. Because Lollipop has bugs.
LG should have probably waited a bit too.
The HTC M8 and Samsung S5 have begun rolling out Lollipop as of today. I hardly see Motorola being faster than others as they claim.
Samsung was ready to go with a quick launch of 5 too. But they also held off for the bug fixes.
You went a little too far on both statements. Moto X Pure Edition users are rocking Lollipop since day 3. And Moto G 2014 soak tests started 5 weeks ago. Your wife has not received it because it’s not ready for her yet. She’ll be getting it soon. Can you name any non-Moto device on the range of Moto G that got (or ill ever get) updated? Let alone on the Moto E range… and it’s in line to get updated soon as well.
