Huawei Australia has moved to reassure its local smartphone customers, following the news yesterday that Google had implemented the US Government’s ban on companies dealing with Huawei.
Following the good news that Google had been granted a temporary licence to continue to support Huawei’s existing smartphone customers. Huawei in Australia is reassuring customers (and would-be customers) that the devices they own today, or may soon buy in retail, will continue to be fully supported by the company regardless of what happens going forward.
In a statement to Ausdroid this morning, Huawei Australia’s Jeremy Mitchell, Director of Corporate Affairs, had this to say:
We want to assure Huawei customers in Australia that the US actions involving Google will not impact consumers with a Huawei smartphone or tablet or those that are planning to buy a Huawei device in the near future from an Australian retail outlet.
Consumers with Huawei devices will still receive security updates and be able to use Google apps. Huawei will continue to provide after-sales services to all existing Huawei and Honor smartphone and tablet products, covering those that have been sold and that are still in stock globally.
Australian consumers will be able to continue using Google services like Google Play and Gmail on their Huawei phones as they normally would.
Google Android updates will continue to be provided for Huawei EMUI and Google apps will not be affected.
Huawei has made substantial contributions to the development and growth of Android around the world. As one of Android’s key global partners, we have worked closely with their open-source platform to develop an ecosystem that has benefitted both users and the industry. We will continue to prioritize the development and use of the Android ecosystem.
Huawei will continue to build a safe and sustainable software ecosystem, in order to provide the best experience for all users globally.
I planned to buy a new Huawei mate 30 pro coming this Oct 2019, however i must consider other phone after the sanction. Who want to own a Huawei that won’t run Android play, gmail, youtube, etc? Not only Google stopped supplying their services, other US techs suppliers to Huawei did the same after the US sanction. Better look for a non Huawei phone. Samsung may hugely benefited from here.
I have to say I’m interested to see what Huawei do here. However, as someone who’s quite heavily invested in Google’s services (we use G Suite, Play Music, etc quite extensively) I don’t see how a Huawei phone with no access to those services would be very useful for me.
Trump is obviously hoping to bring China back to negotiating table. So far, his plan is working: people are scared to buy a potentially unsupported phone.
Sounds a bit like smoke and mirrors to me Chris. I’m not sure how they can make all those promises without evidence to support their claims. I’ve never owned a Huawei phone other than a Nexus 6P but I definitely wouldn’t buy one at the moment until this thing plays out
Supporting their existing phones isn’t difficult, they likely have what they need to do that. It’s just going forward with any new devices that I have questions about.
Will this US silliness eventually extend to other Chinese smartphone manufacturers such as Oppo and OnePlus, I wonder?
I guess it depends on if Oppo and OnePlus also violate sanctions as Huawei did.
Huawei didn’t violate sanctions, well, at least that’s not the reason behind the Entity Listing. The rationale there is a threat to the US national security.
Indeed. And the theoretical threat to US national security is all to do with their 5G network hardware. The mobile and laptop parts of Huawei’s business is collateral damage.
That thought crossed my mind too , the way spanky is going it will be amazing if there is not hostilities between US and China in the next 2 years…
