Huawei has announced a new phone in the P30 series for Australia, called the P30 Lite. Featuring a 6.15-inch FHD display, mid-tier Kirin 710 processor, 4GB of RAM and a reasonable 3,340 mAh battery, the P30 Lite has a 32-megapixel selfie camera and a triple rear camera setup.
JB HiFi will be selling the P30 Lite from tomorrow, with the starting price of $499. This puts it a good $200 less than Google’s mid-tier competitor the Pixel 3a, and in a couple of weeks, it’ll land at Harvey Norman too.
Storage wise, the P30 Lite features 128GB of storage, but that’s not really the big news – this is probably one of the cheapest smartphones with a triple-rear camera setup.
The main sensor is a 24MP camera with wide-angle lens. There’s also an 8MP ultra-wide angle lens and a 2MP Bokeh lens, as well as a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor.
There’s two colours on offer – Midnight Black and Peacock Blue – and Huawei is giving away a free pair of Huawei Freebuds Lite with every purchase, valued at $99.
The pricing is sharp, but with the cloud still hanging over Huawei while it resolves its legal woes in the US, it’s a little unclear as to how this phone should be valued. On one hand it is quite affordable for what it offers, but on the other, it’s just not clear how well it will be updated and supported going forward. We have Huawei’s commitment to support existing customers, but how well the company can do that in the event that Google’s support for Android is pulled … well that’s a big unknown.
Too risky especially with major Android OS updates. Security patches should continue to flow through… but it’s definitely an unknown at the moment with nothing concrete.
There’s no way anyone should be recommending Huawei phones at the moment unfortunately.
