Optus - Netflix
With the imminent launch of Netflix in Australia approaching, a number of Australian ISP’s and mobile operators are offering deals with streaming video services. Vodafone has partnered with Stan, Telstra with Presto and now we’re seeing Optus partnering with Netflix to offer deals on their home broadband, as well as customers using Post and Pre-Paid plans.

The entry into a partnership with Netflix is one that offers Australians a chance to access one of the most well known video streaming services. It’s a short partnership, but one which could be extended based on how well it’s received by customers.

Allen Lew, Optus Chief Executive Officer, said

We know that while many Australians prefer to watch their favourite TV show or the latest movies from the comfort of their home, they also want portable content for their smartphones. With our subscription offer, we’re giving customers all the entertainment they need in the one place, and the freedom to watch what they want, when they want it. Partnering with the world’s largest and most recognised internet TV service is a significant milestone for Optus as we look to bring a more superior TV experience to customers across our fixed and mobile platforms.

The deals for broadband and Post Paid customers include a 6-month Netflix subscription on offer when you sign up to a plan at a specific level between the 24th of March and the 5th of July. The deals start on :

  • home broadband bundle on a $60 plan or above, on a 24 month contract.
  • a postpaid mobile service on a $60 plan or above, on a 24 month contract.
  • a postpaid mobile broadband service on a $30 plan or above, on a 24 month contract.

Optus pre-paid customers are also being offered a Netflix subscription, although only a 3-month one, when they purchase any prepaid phone or mobile broadband device and activate the included SIM, presumably within the same time period.

To get your 3 or 6 month Optus/Netflix bundle you’ll have to activate the service and then head to an Optus/Netflix page via a link you’ll receive. Once there you’ll get a Netflix code to redeem via the Netflix website.

But rememeber – Netflix is Video Streaming and hence will use a fair bit of data. Optus has also announced different ways you can either top-up or at least top up your account automatically before going over your data caps. To start with Optus fixed home broadband customers will get un-metered content, but the news for Optus Mobile customers isn’t as great – but Optus will automatically add an extra GB of data to your plan for a mere $10 when you approach your data limit to avoid the excess data costs.

If you’re keen to try out Netflix this isn’t a bad way to go, if you’re looking to sign up for a new mobile service and with the Galaxy S6/S6 Edge and HTC One M9 looking to launch in the next month or so, it’s a good time to look at a new contract.

Good luck viewing Netflix on your mobile device if the service I receive on my GS5 is anything to go by. When on 3G there’s no mobile internet access, H & H+ are marginally better, 4G is generally good. Don’t try and use it in the airport tunnel rail line as there’s nothing there but you can get excellent service in the city circle tunnel if you want to catch up on your favourite TV!
