Optus just said yesterday that Android 2.2 was good to go for their Galaxy S devices, but to be honest I think it was just customer support trying to say the right things to keep customers happy. Now Optus are saying they “have” Android 2.2 for the Galaxy S in their hands but they have to “test it” which could possibly take them into the middle of November before it’s sent out to users via Kies, or OTA or something like that. So if you’ve been one of the hundreds of users constantly bashing Kies to get your update but got nothing in return, you can rest easy knowing your device is fine and that the update isn’t yet available, you can just be angry at Optus for them saying it was.
I’ve got the latest version of Kies 1.5.3.10103.102, but have been unable to upgrade my Optus Galaxy S for the past week. I continually receive the message “Unable to connect to server. Check internet connection and try again”. So, Hasan, you must have been lucky.
I just downloaded new Kies ver from samsung, then upgrade my galaxy s to the Froyo.DTJP5.
Gave up on Optus and upgraded myself via http://www.ithinkdiff.com/how-to-upgrade-samsung-galaxy-s-to-android-2-2-froyo-build-i9000xxjph-guide/
Worth the upgrade – lots of subtle improvements, noticeably faster App starts and closes and of course Flash! Upgrade easy. All apps saved and most settings but remember to write down your APN’s.. Contacts, pictures, video, music and pdf’s saved but had to sync to get Contacts, Calendar, Emails. Messages lost.
26th now and still no Froyo… they’re starting to push the boundaries of “mid to late November” … only a few days left! lie after lie?
Should we be surprised Optus can’t keep their word? 22nd October and all I hear from Optus Re: Android 2.2 is the sound of crickets breaking the silence…
22nd November even!!
And here we are 11th November and still no update, what the hell is the hold up?
Not happy Jan!
In the optus twitter they said the 15th. Lets see if they can hold to that.
The 15th is over ๐ no froyo. Optus twitter said mid-late november now instead.
Yes, Vodophone who piggyback off Optus said it is available Nov 15.
bah, optus firmware is shit. Completely bloated with apps that maybe 1% of people ever use. Personally I use the universal bare bones version available on samfirmware.com and odis to flash it. Just gotta make sure you keep the optus CSC else you will have no phone capability ๐
Or you could go one safer and use my open-source cross-platform Odin alternative, Heimdall (http://www.glassechidna.com.au/products/heimdall/).
Looks like I spoke too soon… just went back to the page with the info on using the reg hack, and it looks like it’s no longer working – maybe samsung put a stop to it? ๐
Oh well… sounds like using odin is a much safer way to do it anyway, so I might look into that.
Yeah, with Virgin too (though after 10 years with them – never having a problem and recommending them to everyone – what they put me through just to get this phone and plan, I don’t think I’ll be staying with them once my contract runs out)… Anyway, what’s this bloatware people are talking about on Optus? I hear there’s already quite a few people that used the registry hack to force the Kies software to update to 2.2 in AU ๐ I considered it, but figured if it was only days away, I’d wait for the official update – but… Read more ยป
What plan are you on? I’m on the 49 smart cap with them ($300 calls, 2gb data, unlimited text to any network) and I must say I am amazed at how good the cap and reception is. I used to be on the 3 network (I think 3 and Vodafone have joined forces now) and I h-a-t-e-d them. The reception was the worst where I live (about 30mins from Brisbane city). I’d usually have to turn my phone off then on again to send a message or make a call. It wasn’t my handset either, because my phone was stolen,… Read more ยป
I went for the $39 easy cap – same as $49 smart cap but I only get 300MB data and call credits don’t roll over to next month… oh, and no free sms to non-virgins ๐ Data-wise, I’m usually around a wifi spot anyway, so 300MB should be fine most of the time. I’ve never had net access on my phone before – I was one of those “What do you need a phone to do that for?!” kind of people… I would always say “I just need a phone that can make/receive calls…” didn’t need no fancy shmancy phone/pda… Read more ยป
Hope it comes out for vodafone soon :p. I feel the same as I felt when I was waiting for the sgs to choke out on voda/3.
I’m glad Virgin didn’t get any of that bloatware. Just came with the stock bloatware that Samsung provides.
@Optus, please remember that if your tests find that you can’t download from Android Market or can’t login to Gmail the problem doesn’t stem from froyo, rather THE PROBLEM STEMS FROM YOUR SHITE SYSTUUUMS ๐
what about Vodafone? I know that vodafone doesn’t do much modification to the original firmware like optus does..
They think that we are dumb…well I’m fed up now you got test it? BULLSHIT!
Heavens forbid they’d test it instead of just rolling it out to all their customers’ devices only to find it bricks either them or the network.
Has there been any news from other carriers? I’m with Virgin, and I’m pretty sure they didn’t put any bloat-ware on the phone, so the testing should be a lot quicker.
was thinking the same, im sure Optus could easily give virgin customers froyo, but that would make optus look bad to their more direct customers.
phone manufacturers and phone carriers pushing out android updates fast is going to be the new battleground (i hope). Doesnt matter if you have a hardware superior product, if its running an older version of android its useless eg galaxy S Vs nexus one
Optus should call AMI and tee up an appointment with one of their Doctors about their ‘premature problem’.
Whatever .. my phone works fine with the oclf app running .. will only upgrade to froyo once I think its worth it.
I want to thank you for your comment – made me look into OCLF – and yeah, I’m no longer in any rush to upgrade to 2.2 anymore either ๐ this thing is flying now! When I first got the phone it seemed so fast, everything happened quickly switching between apps/screens etc… then after installing a few apps from the app store and setting up a few other things – yahoo mail, multiple gmail accounts, imap etc… It was regularly getting very sluggish, and at times completely freezing up – one time I couldn’t even answer a call due to… Read more ยป
OCLF is good but with the new update of kies you need to uninstall lang fix to back up your contacts or messages pain in the neck.
Hi
How do I install the OCLF lagfix on my Samsung Galaxy S?
“testing” … hah! more like adding all the Optus crap-ware ๐
yer skip the bloatware Optus. Games, socialview, App store, mobile TV are POS
