Sony Ericsson today have announced the imminent release of the Xperia Ray exclusively available at Vodafone.

The Xperia Ray will be available in Vodafone stores on the 28th September and is looking to be a decent mid-range Android offering.

Vodafone have confirmed that the Xperia Ray will be available on several plans, including the $29 Cap plan with $5 handset repayments over 24 months or the $49 Cap plan with no handset repayments also over 24 months.

The Ray is geared to be a petite and highly functional device that’s smaller than the Xperia Arc, but bigger than the Xperia Mini with its 3.3 inch screen and the performance of the Sony BRAVIA® Engine behind it. The phone will also be rocking the same processor as the Xperia Arc, which means the same performance, but in a smaller package.

Since this will be released on Vodafone, it will also support the new 850MHz frequency that Vodafone is pushing to alleviate pressure on their existing 2100MHz network. This will mean you will get better coverage across the board.

Our very own Matt Booth will be reviewing the phone over the coming weeks, so stay tuned for his write up.

Official Press Release:

Sony Ericsson today announced the new Xperia™ ray smartphone – fast, attractive and compact – will be available exclusively to Vodafone customers at the end of the month.

Like the rest of the Xperia™ range, the Xperia™ ray runs on the Android OS (Gingerbread 2.3) and provides users with access to the very best Sony technology. Its 8.1MP camera and Exmor R™ mobile sensor capture visually outstanding stills and HD videos; and viewing is bright and crystal clear via the Reality Display with Mobile BRAVIA® Engine.

True to Sony Ericsson’s design philosophy, the Xperia™ ray fits snugly in the palm of the users’ hand. For touch-screen fanatics, this 9.4mm thin pocket-rocket features integrated touch keys and a scratch resistant screen. It also boasts a front facing camera and access to the Sony Entertainment Network – a massive catalogue of music and movies.

Social interaction is a breeze with Sony Ericsson’s unique Facebook inside Xperia™ which makes Facebook instantly accessible from the most used areas of the phone. Never miss a birthday again, with birthdays of Facebook friends added to the phones calendar.

John Featherstone, Managing Director, Sony Ericsson Oceania said: “Xperia™ ray delivers on Sony Ericsson’s promise of creating smartphones that allow users to lead a life less ordinary. We believe the smaller size of this device, combined with Sony’s world-renowned camera and screen technology, will make it exceptionally appealing to users who are looking for a smartphone that stands out from the rest.”

It’s a good looking phone and I think it will appeal more to females because of it’s elegant design. This is not to say that it isn’t for guys but it won’t surprise me that the ladies will be the main consumer of this phone.

Not Quad bane HSPA? What about the 900 MHz regional network?

Irwin

It supports the 900MHz band, but only for GSM (2G)

It confuses me as to why this phone has an LED photo light not an LED flash, especially when SE tries to market this as a smaller version of the Arc. Oh well, at least this little one has a front facing camera.
