Google has just updated the Device Dashboard has been updated with some interesting stats. Surprisingly, 45% of all Android devices accessing the Android Market are running Android 2.2 ‘Froyo’, a whole release generation behind 2.3.3 ‘Gingerbread’ which is accessing the Android Market 38% of the time. It’s also interesting to note that only 1.8% of all devices accessing the Android Market run Honeycomb — one can only imagine that amount of Tablets running Android 2.2 or 2.3 that can’t get access to the Honeycomb source code. This means one thing: We need Ice Cream Sandwich, and soon.

More on topic, Google clearly hasn’t handled the release of Android 3.x very well. Look on eBay and you’ll find lots of cheap tablets from China running 2.2 or 2.3. If Google had released the 3.x source code, all tablets could be running it, whether from big-name manufacturers or not. And hackers working on Cyanogenmod or other ROM’s could make it work on phones – or back-ported the useful parts to 2.3.x.
Yes, we desperately need Icecream Sandwich to reunite the two branches of Android and “reopen” the source code.

That’s acceptably worded, but…
“Gingerbread which is accessing the Android Market 38% of the time.”
That’s badly worded. It could be interpreted as saying Gingerbread phones spend 38% of their time accessing the Market.
