Sony Ericsson have begun the roll-out of the Android 2.3.4 “Gingerbread” update for the Xperia Series starting with the Xperia Play on Optus and Virgin, and the Xperia Arc on Virgin. The update was meant to begin in October, but hey, a week into November isn’t too bad considering how long some updates can be postponed for.
The update will bring continuous auto-focus for the Xperia Play along with the ability to switch on and off the auto-brightness setting — an option not available on the Xperia Arc or Xperia Neo. The new camera application on the Xperia Play is now themed like the rest of the UI instead of being the same application as the AOSP. There’s also a few cool extra features in the camera application according to a commenter at the source link.
We’re not 100% sure if the update is being sent over-the-air (FOTA) or via Sony Ericsson’s PC Companion tool. Either way you should be able to update your device now, enjoy!

No Arc update for Optus?
any time frame for an Arc update on Optus?
I just went onto PC Companion tool with my Virgin Arc with the biggest smile on my face. It says there’s no new upgrade ๐ God damn it I want to use wifi on my phone without it having to disconnect every second!
Hmmph, it’s not out OTA?
Nah man, just checked with both PC Companion and OTA. But I googled about the update and this came up:ย The software update will be delivered to all users over the air, and Sony Ericsson will send them notifications on its availability. Users will also be able to perform manual checks for the new OS flavor. ๐ย
Looks like it’s being sent out gradually then. Interesting, thanks!
I’ve had this update on my Virgin Arc for about 2 weeks now, Sony Ericsson Australia are just slow to report at times.
Thanks for letting us know 2 weeks ago, Aleksander. We got no tips on this ๐
