It was a big weekend for Apple, a $1.049 Billion weekend to be exact, which will obviously be appealed again and again through every avenue that is available in the US. Samsung and Apple both put out statements but the statement we have been waiting for has been from Google who have advised TheVerge today :
The court of appeals will review both infringement and the validity of the patent claims. Most of these don’t relate to the core Android operating system, and several are being re-examined by the US Patent Office. The mobile industry is moving fast and all players — including newcomers — are building upon ideas that have been around for decades. We work with our partners to give consumers innovative and affordable products, and we don’t want anything to limit that.
The main ‘event’ if you will is personally what I’m waiting for, in other words Apple vs Google. Google has pretty much stayed out of the whole patent debate except for recent comments to say that software patents are hurting innovation. Apple has made no moves so far to directly challenge Android by going directly to Google instead taking on Samsung, HTC and Motorola. Now that Google owns Motorola we have seen a recent lawsuit from Motorola seeking the halt of importation of Apple products based on some of their newly acquired patents, but really it gets down to will we ever actually see an Apple vs Google or iOS vs Android patent battle in a court room?
Seeing this happen from Australia, make me understnad why so many in the world hate Americans. It is only in the god ole USof A where a jury in a state which hosts the foundr and the emmpire of the litigant, against an Asian workhorse. If this had been fought on the worls tage, perhaps there may have been another outcome. Thank goodness the developers of the motor car were not that greed driven.

Apple may have invented the phone, but google invented the internet.
google won’t sue apple. google makes most of its money from apple, compared to android or any other OS. remember the OS makes no money, it is the ads.
If apple sue google – who knows what will happen. I suspect google would just fold and make a system change
no, google will just start off with “IOS notification bar ? looks familiar, bet we can sue over that one”. then watch apple fold
Google doesn’t sell Android. They sell ads books, movies and things via the play store, therefore there is no direct revenue from selling the operating system itself. And it is sure hard to sue something that’s free.
Not hard to sue a company though, and Google sure has plenty of $$ — not to mention that if Apple can demonstrate that Google itself, in the design of Android, has infringed on Apple patents, then Google is in a world of hurt.
Of course, Google has a good number of its own patents that it can probably use to screw Apple back.. so the likelihood of them going each other? I’d say pretty much slim to none.
“Apple vs Google” may never happen – too much to risk for Apple. No congressman will want to push to fix the broken patents system (even the Patent Office agrees its broken), to the advantage of a South Korean company. Google is big, iconic, innovative and _American_ enough that an Apple vs Google case may be enough to push public debate to actually review it.
