The previously leaked Sony Xperia Z was finally announced today at CES and it it’s certainly an impressive unit. The Xperia Z is Sony’s 2013 flagship device and its specs are certainly strong enough to hold them up for the entire year, at least it looks that way on paper, we’ll see about real-world use.
- 5-inch 1080p Reality Display
- Android 4.1 Jelly Bean w/ Skin (4.2 updated at a later date)
- Snapdragon S4 Pro Quad-Core CPU @ 1.5GHz
- 13MP Exmor RS Rear Camera
- 2GB RAM, unknown expandable memory.
- Dust and water resistant (IP55 & IP57)
- Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, NFC
- 2330mAh Battery
- 7.9mm Thickness
With its dust protection and water resistant body, the device can be submerged in water for 30 minutes without sustaining damage. Battery life from the 2330mAh battery is extended through the use of Battery STAMINA Mode which closes applications when the phone goes into sleep mode, and then re-opens them when you use the device again. No idea how this is going to affect multitasking, but we’ll soon find out.
The Xperia Z and ZL — a smaller form-factor of the same device — will be launching in Q1 2013 globally with each variant going to specific areas that weren’t announced. Pricing is also a mystery, though it will change region to region.
Is there any more info on the “temperd glass” i.e does any one know if it is gorilla glass?
I still dont understand why companies like Sony launch Flagship phones that arent on the latest version of the Android Operating system at launch, it makes it very clear that updates and support for the device aren’t gonna be great since they cant even get it right to begin with,
7.9 mm thick, not 9.7 mm! You’ve turned it from fab to flab!
Just from pics and videos I prefer the smaller ZL with the larger battery and exterior that is less prone to smears and smudges. Actually holding the 2 phones in my hand may give me a different outlook though.
ZL has a plastic back, while the Z is glass. Good.
ZL however is not waterproof, while the Z is. Bugger.
Z is LTE compatible in Australia
ZL is not
Pretty easy decision for me.
The Aussie ZL variant is compatible with Australian LTE.

In case no one notices, Xperia Z has 443 PPI, this puts iPhone in shame, the highest PPI in the market I think. Despite all the premium features, I especially love the earphone coming with it, 5-24000hz. I am seriously in love with this phone.
P/s: whoever said that this phone has designing problem, I said that you have issues with beauty’s appreciation. Glasses covers both sides just makes it sparkling and stunning. Absolutely an amazing device 🙂
Not a fan, the specs sound great but that power button is just so…… hideously big and obnoxious.
5 inchhes iis the sweet spot for me
Glass back.
Oh God.
A glass back.
I’m definitely not a Sony fanboy and generally don’t get excited for new phone hardware, but these genuinely look fantastic!
Let’s hope they are out before my next contract renewal and they keep the ROM as close to AOSP as possible!
I’m sold. Will be interesting to see Samsung’s move with the S4. For me, they need to move away from the cheap plastic build of it’s predecessors and look at high end materials found in the Z and Padfone 2, for there isn’t much room to move on the internals the Z (and the PF2) puts up. Good stuff Sony, I think this is what everyone’s been waiting for following the removal of Ericsson.
yep, always been a Sony fan but never like Erricson’s designs. Glad Sony have picked their game up again like they were in the 90’s
