Sony have today confirmed the rumour we reported at the end of April, the Xperia ZR is on it’s way. The specs that were leaked a few weeks back were pretty much on the money — a standout feature for many users will be the 13MP camera. Just as clothes don’t make the man, megapixels don’t make the camera, but we know that Sony have done a good job with mobile cameras before.
Sony Mobile Communications (“Sony Mobile”) today introduces the new Xperia ZR featuring the highest level of water-resistance for capturing photos and Full HD videos underwater. This Android smartphone offers leading technology and content with a 4.6” HD Reality display, 13 megapixel fast capture camera, Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ S4 Pro quad-core 1.5 GHz processor, and 4G LTE.
The press release, like so many before it, is pretty dry but in essence the Xperia ZR is essentially a ruggedised Xperia Z that’s notably (for those that like to go swimming with their phones in their pocket) more waterproof. The rating on the Xperia ZR is in fact a lot higher at IP58 standard than the Xperia Z. What this means in layman’s terms is that the device can be submerged for up to 30 minutes as deep as 1.5 meters.
The chassis appears to be slightly more rubberised than the Xperia Z, clearly from their waterproof focus for the device and it appears that we should see the device somewhere in the next quarter.
