The Play Store is full of Age of Empires rip-offs and strategy guides, but if a Nikkei report is true, we might soon see an official version of the popular real-time strategy game appear before long. According to the report, Microsoft have recruited Japanese developers Klab to port a number of Xbox and Windows games to Android and iPhone, with the first game said to be a free-to-play version of the legendary Age of Empires.

Age of Empires will be the first of many such games ported over, and we should see it become available before the end of the ‘fiscal year’ – although this is unclear because the fiscal year varies country-to-country, and in the US, a person or business can determine their own fiscal year independent of the government (for reference, Microsoft’s fiscal year begins in July, while the US federal government’s starts in October).

Free to play? So this will be an Age of Empires game, but not THE Age of Empires then? Why isn’t there an awesome, full on rts on mobile devices yet, touch screen really seems to be perfect fit. Unless there is one that I’m not aware of?
