Galaxy S4 Active
If you’ve been waiting for the ruggedised version of the Samsung Galaxy S4 to go on-sale in Australia, you’d better start running towards an AllPhones store because stores are now advising that the Galaxy S4 Active is now in stock and waiting for you to take it home.

Certified as IP67 compliant, the Galaxy S4 Active is both Water & Dust resistant and as part of this ‘life-proofing’ process has changed the capacative buttons on the front of the phone to physical buttons. Although the internal specs are similar to the standard Galaxy S4, there are a couple of differnces, physically it’s slightly larger and heavier and the rear facing camera has been downgraded to an 8MP sensor.

Galaxy S4 Active Specs

  • 5-inch 1080p TFT LCD Display
  • 1.9GHz Quad-Core CPU
  • 2GB RAM
  • 16GB Internal Storage (expandable)
  • 8MP rear camera and 2MP front facing camera
  • LTE, DC-HSPA+
  • Android 4.2.2 (Jelly Bean)
  • 139.7 x 71.3 x 9.1 mm, 153g
  • 2600mAh Battery

The Galaxy S4 Active has been receiving some good feedback around tech circles as being the slightly better looking version of the Galaxy S4 range and I’d have to agree, but some people just can’t get past the camera downgrade.

AllPhones are not the only retailer who will be getting the Galaxy S4 Active with Telechoice also advertising the Galaxy S4 Active as coming soon. Both outlets are pricing the Galaxy S4 Active at $699 as an outright purchase, a slightly cheaper option than the stock standard Galaxy S4.

AllPhones have no colour choices or plan information listed on their website as yet and stores seem to only have the ‘Urban Grey’ model in stock but TeleChoice lists additional colour choices – Dive Blue and Orange Flare – listed on their website as well as advertising plans starting from $38.50 per month in their catalogue, so if you’re after something a little more out of the ordinary you may want to wait for TeleChoice.

No word back from any of the carriers or Samsung Australia as to whether the Galaxy S4 Active will appear as part of their range. If you see anywhere else selling the Galaxy S4 Active make sure you let us know, but as soon as we hear anything we’ll let you know.

Will you be buying a Galaxy S4 Active?

Poor quality finish

Bought a couple today (for me/partner) – first impression is very nice phone. However I am not a fan of the grey front, reminds me of the S3/Note II grey. The problem I have with this is that it seems the part where the frame meets the screen is a haven for dust particles etc. Having owned the white/black S4 models this doesn’t seem to be as bad as the grey. Not to mention it looks like parts of the edge of the screen aren’t painted/filled evenly. Both versions have this in different spots – and it cheapens it for… Read more ยป

Still no options from Samsung of a 32GB version. Cant work out why they feel Australia doesn’t need storage on our phones yet.

Me

It has a micro SD slot to solve that problem.

Is the screen any stronger on this phone? Or does it crack just as easy as the normal s4?

Half way through a Plan with my HTC One XL, I’ll wait till next year and see how the “Note 3” looks.

Note III will be a killer device.
