We’re all getting a little antsy regarding a launch of the Nexus 5, we’ve seen it over and over again – mostly ‘accidentally’ from the official source – we’ve seen it’s internals and externals multiple times and we even know a starting price; but we don’t have an official release date yet. What we do have is rumours, and today there’s one more.
There’s been multiple rumours regarding release dates for the Nexus 5, we received a tip that it would be announced October 14th, but it seems that, that was apparently the technical acceptance date. The Kit Kat Google+ site has gone to town messing with Android fans with supposed hidden messages in seemingly innocuous pictures they’ve released, but overnight, MobileSyrup received a tip that the phone may launch in Google Play on October 31st – Halloween in the US, in keeping with the candy bar theme of Kit Kat. Their tip also states that the phone will launch on Canadian carriers – Rogers, Bell, TELUS, Koodo and Virgin – on November 7th or 8th.
While Australian carriers last year skipped the Nexus 4, with Telstra claiming the lack of LTE led to the decision, this year they will have no such excuse. It will then come down to whether Google or LG handle the updates for the device as to whether consumers will be willing to trust a carrier on a Nexus device again, as the way updates were and still are handled by Samsung for the Galaxy Nexus is an absolute travesty.
Hopefully we see an event soon, then we can start asking Australian carriers if they intend to carry the device and get to the nitty gritty on updates.

If it were to be revealed on the 31st of Oct, wouldn’t Google have sent the invites by now?
These tech companies usually send out invites to the media a week before the reveal. There’s been no invites, so I’m doubting the 31st Oct reveal.
Of course I hope I’m wrong, but I don’t see it happening.
Why on earth would anyone choose to buy a Nexus on contract via a telco?! Even the tiniest amount of telco bloatware / tinkering will debase the phone! Buy it outright, free of contract, and make the telcos earn your business, instead of being tied to them.

I wouldn’t trust any of the Australian carriers for timely updates. Though considering the rumored price is quite low, it doesn’t make sense to get it subsidised. Going on BYO plan would save you more than the phone is worth, and considering the initial outlay for the device, I just don’t see any reason to be tied to one carrier for 2 years for it.
Given the pricing of the Nexus phones, I’d prefer to buy one outright on a BYO plan. For the N4 on the Telstra Small plan you could actually save money, depending how much the MRO was.
ATM this is the quandry I’m going through.
A N5 outright for $500(?) plus $50/mth
versus ….
Sony Z1/HTC One for $69/mth incl handset repayment.
That equates to the N5 being $44 more over 24mths.
I think it pretty much comes down to how important updates are for you… Or camera quality, etc.
$50? Boost mobile highest pay as you go is $40 and uses the full Telstra network. That would be about $200 cheaper. Not fussed about getting full speed you could go with aldi for $35 a month which would be around $300 cheaper. For now I’m happy with aldi and just pay $15 a month for the data and then top up $30 when I need to which would save about $500 over 2 years. Then again I’m not bothered about 4G speeds. If a website takes 2 seconds to load instead of 1 I’ll get over it.
I will be doing the same thing, I’m on the $35 aldi unlimited and am either gonna buy the lg g2 or nexus 5 outright
