Nokia’s Android powered phone has made its first appearance for sale in Australia, with Mobicity advising that the Nokia X Dual-SIM is now available for sale and is in-stock for immediate shipment.
The phone is available to purchase in four colours – Black, White, Red and of course Green – for $169.95 + Delivery. There’s no sign of the Cyan or Yellow colour options that the Nokia X reportedly comes in, in other markets, with Mobicity advising there’s no news on these colour options.
EDIT: Looks like the Green and Red are $10 more expensive than Black or White at $179.95each and both are currently are out of stock.
The Nokia X is the first in a line of three models that represents Nokia’s first attempt at an Android handset. In the coming months we will see the Nokia X+ which will come with slightly more RAM(768MB), as well as a Nokia XL which includes an upgraded Rear Camera(5MP) as well as a front-facing camera(2MP).
The Nokia X uses code directly from the Android Open Source Project(AOSP) taking code from Android 4.1.2. Nokia said at launch that using AOSP will make for easier upgrades, but exactly how much effort a Microsoft owned Nokia will put into delivering Android udpates is unknown.
Nokia has completely removed all Google Services – Google Play, Google Cloud Messaging and all the other services that normally make Android Great. Nokia has actually built in their own services, Nokia App Store, Nokia Here Maps and Nokia Mix Radio, as well as a service they call ‘Fast Lane’, which is a list of ongoing activities on your phone.
The Nokia X is definitely a lower end handset, in terms of specs it comes with :

Nokia Australia at last report were still investigating whether they would be launching the Nokia X series in Australia. Nokia has positioned the series as a line aimed at ‘developing markets’. Nokia Australia advised at the launch:
With regards to local availability, Australia is part of our future plans for Nokia X and we will be evaluating its suitability for the Australian market with our channel partners.
If you’re interested in some solid Nokia hardware design, but running Android (well, a version of it) then the Nokia X is a good place to start. Of course, the minute the CyanogenMod team have anything available I suspect it’ll be loaded onto many handsets quite quickly.
