Chromebook Pixel

Nearly two years on, Google’s expensive Chromebook Pixel is still one of the best ChromeOS devices out there, and has a dedicated fanbase. It didn’t receive an update in 2014, leading many to believe that the Pixel would go quietly into the night as newer Chromebooks overtook it on specs and features. Not so. Google’s got a Pixel 2 in the works.

Renee Niemi of Google’s Chrome and Android for Work and Education unit gave a presentation at an event called Team Work 2015, in which she confirmed the Pixel 2. The video was previously available on YouTube, but has now been set to Private.

The Pixel’s successor might also be thin on the ground. A quote from the video, courtesy of OMGChrome, both raises our hopes and starts to deflate them at the same time:

We do have a new Pixel coming out and it will be coming out soon. We will be selling it but I just have to set your expectations: this is a development platform. This is really a proof of concept. We don’t make very many of these — we really don’t. And […] our developers and our Googlers consume 85% of what we produce. But yes, we do have a new Pixel coming out.

We previously reported that a Pixel 2 might be happening, and this news almost certainly has Dan doing backflips.

If you’re in the market for a super hot new Chromebook the Pixel 2 could be it, but be wary of the price. Besides the high price of the original Pixel, it never came to our shores officially, so importing it was a very costly endeavour.

A web developer by day with an interest in consumer gadgets and electronics, he also enjoys reading comics and has a worryingly large collection of Transformers figures. He'd like to think he's a gamer, but his Wii has been in a box since he moved to Sydney, and his PlayStation Vita collection is quite lacking. Hope it’s not $1500 like last time.
