Samsung’s traditional September announcement of the latest Galaxy Note handset at German trade-show IFA appears to be off, with a person familiar with the matter advising the Wall Street Journal that the company has moved up the schedule to announce the phone in August.
Samsung has traditionally announced the Galaxy Note in September, putting them squarely up against their largest rival – Apple in a hotly contested bid to gain market share. After Apple began releasing Note sized handsets last year, Samsung has apparently re-thought their announcement/release strategy, aiming to get the product into market prior to the iPhone 6s which is expected to be announced some time in September.
The stakes are high and this year Samsung is playing to win. With declining sales numbers over the past two fiscal years, Samsung needs to address the numbers game.
The rumours around the Galaxy Note 5 have already begun to emerge, with specs, and even renders appearing. It would make sense to see a release around this time, but Samsung has yet to announce an event for August. We’ll be reaching out to Samsung Australia first thing Monday morning to see if any invites will be forthcoming, but we don’t expect to hear anything until Samsung is ready.
