Google’s Nexus Protect hardware insurance plan was announced at their Nexus event on Wednesday morning and has since shown up on the US Google Store for people purchasing the Nexus 5X and 6P. While the Nexus 5X and 6P won’t be shipping till later this month, Google has launched the MyNexusProtect website in preparation for the first claims.
The website is fairly basic and features a contact form, as well as information about Nexus Protect, an FAQ and a link to learn more about Assurant Solutions – the company underwriting the program.
The Nexus Protect program costs US$69 for the LG built Nexus 5X and US$89 for the larger Huawei built Nexus 6P with a US$79 excess fee to be paid per claim. Nexus Protect allows for unlimited mechanical fault based claims, and two approved accidental damage claims within the 2-year term. Claims have to be made within 90 days of the incident.
If you’re interested in checking out Nexus Protect, the FAQ is pretty interesting, you can head over to mynexusprotect.com right now.
As with AppleCare, you are not guaranteed to get a new Nexus replacement from Nexus Protect.
Your phone will be replaced with a new, refurbished, or recertified product of like kind and quality
ACC gives you two years minimum against ‘mechanical faults’. So if it breaks and you did nothing wrong, you get it fixed or replaced at their discretion if minor, at your discretion if major.
Seems like the cost of this plan plus the excess might be nearing a screen replacement anyway, so doesn’t seem worth it for Aus. Not to mention the price would be jacked up.
My thoughts exactly. Unless you break it twice.
On the keynote it was mentioned that it will roll out to other countries soon, other useless title that tries to attract readers
“mechanical breakdown” seems very vague and open to interpretation, I hope they add more detail..
For example, if the non-removable battery starts tanking within 5 minutes of use, is that considered “mechanical”? That would certainly be the type of thing I would want insurance against.
