With Christmas over and the new year almost upon us, it’s time once again to turn our attention to one of our favorite topics of the news cycle – Samsung Galaxy S rumours! Today, were talking screen size – or rather, sizes – for the Galaxy S7.
Reuters, referencing South Korean publication Electric Times, has reported that Samsung is gearing up to deliver a “flat” (read: normal) 5.2-inch Galaxy S7 and a larger 5.5-inch “curved” model (read: Edge). No surprise there – the “Edge” phones have been popular this year so we’re expecting them to continue the trend in 2016. The surprise is in the two screen sizes.
What’s not known is whether this supposed larger 5.5-inch display is actually the size of an Edge display (if it were uncurved) or if Samsung might actually launch two distinct – though not terribly different – sizes for the Galaxy S7.
It seems a good move on Samsung’s part to peg the standard unit screen at 5.2 inches – that seems to be where the industry and consumers have settled as the current “sweet spot” for mainstream handsets, and with ever-shrinking bezels on smartphones we can likely expect the phone to feel like a slightly smaller model. The Galaxy S6 felt great in the hand at 5.1 inches – perhaps there’s room to trim down the bezel and increase the screen within a similar physical package.
Electronic Times also reiterated earlier speculation on the release date of the phone, quoting a February launch. That will be Samsung’s earliest ever Galaxy S handset launch in the calendar year, and it lines up with the timing of Mobile World Congress 2016.
Finally, some expected launch shipment numbers were let slip: 3.3 million units for the “standard” model and a much smaller 1.6 million units for the “Edge”. This would bring the total launch unit count to a touch under 5 million.
If Samsung is indeed planning to unleash the Galaxy S7 at Mobile World Congress, we won’t have long to wait to see if these rumours pan out. Ausdroid will be on the ground in Barcelona on February, ready to see what’s coming next.
