Messaging application WhatsApp has had a small foray onto the desktop with a Chrome web client, but they’ve hit the big time now adding a desktop client for both Windows and Mac OS.
The desktop clients are aimed at higher end versions of Windows and Mac with the client only available for Windows 8+ and Mac OS 10.9 upwards. There’s no word on a Linux client at this stage, but from history we’d say that there’s not much hope there, still, the web client should work well for you.
The apps will mirror conversations from your mobile app to the desktop so you can follow along with conversations without getting your phone out. The bonus of a native desktop client WhatsApp says is a you get support for native desktop notifications, better keyboard shortcuts, and more.
To setup the desktop client, download the app for your specific OS from whatsapp.com/download, then once you open it up, scan the QR code from the WhatsApp app on your phone (Hit the overflow menu {three dots} and select WhatsApp Web).
If you haven’t tried WhatsApp, you can download and use it for free from Google Play now, and then try out the web or native desktop client for free as well.
I have WhatsApp on my phone and have tried to get it to work on my tablet so I can communicate on that when I don’t have my phone on me. But I can’t get it to work, it seems to be either use it on the phone or the tablet but not both. Do others have the same problem?
Yep, one device at a time, unless it’s through the web interface. Or, now, one of these native apps.
I miss out since I only use Linux and ChromeOS. Not that I really use WhatsApp much anyway.
