Motorola hasn’t yet officially announced the launch date for the Moto G5 or G5 Plus here in Australia, but it appears they’re set for launch soon with the phones now showing on their Australian website.
The Moto G5 and G5 Plus have been hotly anticipated since they were announced at Mobile World Congress. There has been some speculation about which of the Moto G5 Plus models will launch here since it was announced in both 3GB and 4GB RAM configs, the Australian website is listing the 3GB RAM option so that settles that discussion. There’s a little more discussion to be had on the Moto G5 however, with the model on the Australian site listed with 2GB and 3GB options – something we’ll clear up with Moto as soon as we can.
The phones are showing on the Moto Australia online store with the Moto G5 with 16GB of storage priced at $299, while the Moto G5 Plus is offered with 16GB of storage for $399, while 32GB of storage will set you back $449. The phones are being offered in both Lunar Grey and Fine Gold colour options in all storage configurations.
Both phones include an octa-core Snapdragon processor for both models – SD430 for Moto G5, while the G5 Plus gets an SD625 processor. Camera setups for the phones offer a lot as well, with a 12MP/13MP on the Moto G5/G5 Plus. Storage wise, you’ll get 16GB for the Moto G5, while the Plus model has 32GB with both getting microSD card slots as a backup for storage. Moto will be launching the phones with Android 7.0 (Nougat), and we’ll be double checking the security level on that as soon as it launches.

Where waiting on official confirmation from Motorola about the launch dates of the phones, and while it appears you can add the devices to the basket in their online store, we haven’t actually completed a purchase as yet – anyone want to try that one out?
Forget these new released phones. The Sony Xperia X (SD650, 3GB RAM, 32/64GB Storage, 23mpx camera) is going for cheaper than $400 these days for much better specs and build quality.
The Snapdragon 625 is a higher performing higher efficiency SoC when compared with the Snapdragon 650. In this case the higher model number does not mean that the chip is better.
Prices, if shown before, now pulled from Moto site. They were both listed on Good Guys (found via Google) 3 days ago (no prices), now no listing there at all for the phones. I assume we are effectively getting the Indian version with 4Gb with 32Gb version. Is extra 1Gb worth $50 but? Friend paid $50 extra to get from Moto direct the G4 Plus with 3Gb internal. With a 64Gb SD card going for around $30, I am not convinced I need to have 4Gb on board that much. My still running Moto G 4G more or less runs… Read more »

i don’t think so. check out the Motorola Indian website. the site specifically states dual sim and model number is XT1686.
aah bugger. fot a g4 from india and local AU stock, both were dual sim. not sure why they would change unless they are trying for one of the carrier’s to promote it this time around here in AU….

Motorola AU website has the G5 listed as Dual SIM (Dual Nano SIM), but the G5+ is only listed as ‘Nano SIM’. So, I am assuming that G5+ for AU will not be Dual SIM.
Well i’ve pulled the trigger and ordered and paid for a G5. e-invoice received. looking forward to jumping from G3 to G5

Given you speak so highly of the cameras phone do you know if it supports the proper camera api and can shoot raw and manual? My Xplay does not (unless they add it in the next update) and would be something I want to have in my next phone.
One thing I can’t understand is that the base model will always have 32gb of storage whereas the Plus can have only 16bg? How is it plus to have less storage?
I am also surprised that it is only coming with 7.0 and not shipping with 7.1.
I have nougat installed on my g4+, and recently moto upgraded me again. I would think that it would be a no brainer that moto include the upgrade.

Meanwhile the Xiaomi Mi6 comes out, with an 835 CPU, a 5 inch screen, 64GB of storage, 6GB RAM, NFC, etc …. all for the AU$400-500 region.
These are about $100 over the top in pricing.
I reckon that $100 is money well spent given Motorola seem to deliver security and OS updates. Not sure what Xiaomi’s track record is like there.
Yeah those specs do look great for the money I think I would still sooner a Motorola phone mostly due the it having stock Android and at least has in the past often gotten updates. The Xiaomi I think only comes with 6.0 which is crazy given how lone 7 has been out.
If you can get Xiaomi with all the proper Australian frequency bands then it would be a bargain. Good luck with that.
625 gives a sizable battery boost however.
The lack of NFC rules this phone out for my Mum. Seems like a silly exclusion.
From what I have read the G5 Plus has NFC in some markets. The question to be answered is – are we one of those markets?
My limited understanding, thus far, is that NFC will be provided in most if not all regions except in the US

On the Moto website, they make a point of writing “NFC yes” in the specs of the G5+
