At an event in San Francisco this morning, Alphabet subsidiary Nest has unveiled a new suite of products including the Nest Secure alarm system, Nest Hello video doorbell, and Nest Cam IQ outdoor.
Nest Secure
The Nest Secure is a basic home security setup consisting of an alarm, keypad, motion sensor, and of course the Nest smarts for the system.
The Nest Secure starter kit includes motion sensors called Nest Detect which can be placed near doors or windows that could be used to gain ingress into your home. The Nest Secure also includes a key fob called Nest Tag which can arm or disarm the Nest Secure easily, allowing you access to your home with a tap rather than typing in the pin code.
The Nest Secure ties-in with your Nest app, notifying you if someone has tripped a motion sensor and from there you can decide to call in the authorities.
The basic Nest Secure starter pack costs $499USD (pricey), but you can purchase additional Nest Detects for $59USD and Nest Tags for $25USD each.
Nest Hello Video Doorbell
If you’re a fan of the Ring Video Doorbell, then this is a direct competitor with Nest offering basically the same thing.
The Nest Hello Video Doorbell ties in with the Nest Aware smarts from the Nest Cam IQ. The Hello Video Doorbell has a built-in motion sensor which when tied to the Nest Aware face recognition software in Nests cloud, can alert you to who is walking up to your door, or has just rung the doorbell.
Streaming HD video day or night, the Hello Video Doorbell has a 160-degree field of view, so no matter who walks past or rings the bell you should be able to see them.
Nest hasn’t announced pricing for the Hello Video Doorbell, simply saying that it will be available in the US and Canada from early next year before heading to Europe later next year – and unfortunately there’s no mention of Australia.
Nest Cam IQ Outdoor
Following up to their smart Nest Cam IQ Indoor, Nest has waterproofed the camera and it’s heading outdoors.
The Nest Cam IQ Outdoor has all the smarts of Nest Aware, so just like its Indoor sibling, and doorbell cousin, you can be alerted to Who is in your house, rather than just a notification that someone is there.
With a 4K sensor like the Indoor version, the Nest Cam IQ Outdoor will have crystal clear video streamed to your mobile device, though it only streams 1080P FullHD video. The 4K sensor allows you to zoom in up to 12x though, so you can see the face of whoever is there. It also supports HDR, so those videos should look beautiful.
Nest has slightly updated the mounting plate for the Nest Cam IQ Outdoor, hiding the power cable away, so it’s tamper-resistant.
The Nest Cam IQ Outdoor is available to order in the US for $349USD, or $598USD as a two-pack. You can also order a Nest Secure with a Nest Cam IQ Outdoor as well for $598.
Google Asssitant
Lastly, but by no means least, Nest has spoken about upcoming Google Assistant integration in the Cam IQ Indoor . There’s no information on what will be happening but a software update to enable the integration will be headed to customers later this year.
We’re not sure whether we’ll be seeing any of these products in Australia, but if we hear anything we’ll update this article.
Any word on battery power for the doorbell or outdoor cam? My Ring is installed at the front gate, and the battery lasts 2-3 months, which is great. Would love to be able to run all this under the one system.
