We have seen several leaks and rumours surrounding an upcoming Sonos smart speaker with Alexa included (and possibly other digital assistants). Today though we have our very first look at the Sonos smart speaker, expected to be announced in just a week’s time.
The image shows what appears to be a speaker (or at least a speaker grill) that covers the full 360 degrees of the device. There is a touch interface on the top (as we saw from a leak previously) and that is about all it gives away. The speaker is very much in the same design language and style as the PLAY:1 which is not a bad thing. Like most other smart speakers it is not a big bulky speaker.
The Sonos smart speaker “adds integrated voice control functionality with far field microphones. Moreover, the device will support multiple voice platforms and music services, allowing customers to effortlessly control their music on Sonos.” Whether these multiple voice platforms can operate at the same time is unknown but we cannot see why not. Each digital assistant has their own hotword or phrase to activate.
The Sonos smart speaker is expected to be announced on October 4 in New York so we don’t have long to wait to find out more. We have also reached out to Sonos Australia for any local availability and pricing news.
Would you buy a Sonos smart speaker instead of one of the many other brands out there?
