Last year the Melbourne Cup was live streamed on Twitter and was wildly successful with #MelbourneCup trending at number one in 12 different countries. After that success Twitter, the Seven Network and the Victoria Racing Club have announced that the entire 2017 Melbourne Cup Carnival will be live streamed on Twitter.

The Melbourne Cup Carnival that will be covered will include the marquee races on AAMI Victoria Derby Day, Kennedy Oaks Day, and Emirates Stakes Day. The stream will include the Seven Network’s coverage of each of these days and will also include advertising with “TV-style ad spots and pre-rolls”.

The stream can be accessed from various locations including melbournecup.twitter.com, via the free 7live App, the 7live website or on @FlemingtonVRC and @7HorseRacing. This is a great initiative by all stakeholders with them all set to gain from the partnership as do we, the general public.

The Twitter schedule has been set as:

  • AAMI Victoria Derby Day – AAMI Victoria Derby: 3:50pm AEDT, Saturday 4 November 2017 (Australia only)
  • Emirates Melbourne Cup Day – Emirates Melbourne Cup: 3pm AEDT, Tuesday 7 November 2017 (available globally)
  • Kennedy Oaks Day – Kennedy Oaks: 5pm AEDT, Thursday 9 November 2017 (Australia only)
  • Emirates Stakes Day – Emirates Stakes: 4:55pm Saturday 11 November 2017(Australia only)

Hopefully more live events in Australia get onboard the Twitter streaming — having experienced it last year with Twitter streaming Thursday night NFL games it was great to not just watch the game live but easily interact with other viewers via Twitter. It would great for Australian sports to reach a far wider audience and also be great for us as consumers.
