Nokia 9 passes through FCC with dual rear camera and giant battery

HMD Global is bringing the new Nokia handsets, with FCC records revealing approval for a new Nokia 9 flagship device including some specifications. Carrying model number TA-1005, the new Nokia 9 will feature a 5.5-inch OLED display made by LG, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor, and 128GB of fast UFS2.1 Samsung-made flash storage.

The other noteworthy inclusion is the dual rear camera, which will combine 12- and 13-megapixel cameras, and pair those with a front-facing 5-megapixel camera. It’s not clear from the FCC details how those cameras will be configured or what they’ll offer, but the 5MP front-shooter is certainly a lower-res option than you’d expect in a flagship-type phone.

There’s not much else given away, though there is the 3,250 mAh battery which is suitably large for a smartphone these days and will likely power a phone — such as the Nokia 9, which will run stock Android — for a full day with ease, and likely well into a second.

There’s been some discussion elsewhere about the use of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835, referring to its age (about a year old, now) and noting that the 845 has now been released. While it has been announced, I wouldn’t call it widely available just yet, just as the Snapdragon 835 wasn’t widely implemented until well into Q2 last year thanks to Samsung buying them up for its Galaxy S9 range. Regardless, the Snapdragon 835 is a powerful processor, and features in 2017’s best smartphones, so it will certainly be able to hold its own next year.

There’s not much else known about the Nokia 9 at this stage, except that its likely to launch at MWC 2018 in a couple of months. We can’t wait to see it.
