Leader in drone technology DJI has today announced that they’re introducing a knowledge quiz regarding safe drone use for drone pilots in Australia, that pilots will need to answer before flying their drone.
The quiz, which consists of nine basic questions based on the Civil Aviation Safety Authority’s (CASA) rules and regulations for drone flights in Australia, will need to be answered correctly by pilots of DJI drones when they open the DJI GO or DJI GO 4 app from tomorrow.
The move is in response to DJI’s commitment to improving drone safety and promoting safer skies. Adam Welsh, Head of Asia Pacific Public Policy at DJI said of the new requirement
As drones become more portable, intelligent and accessible, we expect to see more enthusiasts using this technology at home, on their travels and as a complementary tool for their work. The majority of pilots fly safely and responsibly but DJI has taken this step so that new drone pilots have an opportunity to learn and understand some simple safety rules as part of their first flying experience.
Australia isn’t the first country to see a safety quiz introduced before pilots are allowed to fly their drone. DJI also introduced a safety Quiz in the US and the UK last year with questions regarding rules from the US Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) and the UK’s Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) presented to users in those countries when opening their app. Overseas drone pilots operating their drone while in Australia will also be presented with the quiz and be required to answer the questions correctly before flying.
DJI says that pilots can continue answering questions until they successfully pass the DJI Knowledge Quiz.
Luke Gumley, Branch Manager, Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems at CASA says CASA welcomes the release of the DJI Knowledge Quiz, saying
It will help new DJI drone owners understand the recreational drone rules in Australia. CASA supports efforts by manufacturers like DJI that develop innovative solutions such as the Knowledge Quiz, and assist drone owners to know their responsibilities as a recreational drone pilot and how to operate their drone safely.
DJI’s latest drone, the Mavic Air was announced late last month and is now on-sale from DJI for $1,299
