As the official Support Network partner of the Commonwealth Games, Optus has announced their plans to help connect athletes with the world at the upcoming games on the Gold Coast.

The games open on April 4th and run through to the 15th of April, and during this time athletes will be able to speak to their friends and family free of charge via our Wi-Fi, whilst charging their phone or using the tablets in-store at the Yes Optus Store in the Athletes Village. While charging their phones, athletes won’t miss any of the action with the events shown on the big screen in the store.

Optus says that Athletes, support staff and media from every country will have access to Optus’ pre-paid plans, offering a heap of data and unlimited talk and text options, with SIMs available in their store. They’ll also be offering a range of mobile accessories for the new iPhone X and Samsung S9 as well.

The Wi-Fi access won’t just be in the store, Optus will also be providing free Wi-Fi access to the 6,600 athletes and team officials in the Games Village, as well as offering boosted coverage in the most populated areas.

Optus State Manager for QLD, Mark O’Shea said Optus was glad to be connecting the Games athletes with their loved ones, while they are staying in the Games Village.

As the Official Support Network of the GC2018 Commonwealth Games, Optus is committed to providing a great experience for all our athletes, support staff and fans throughout the games.

The media staff covering the Games – no, Ausdroid isn’t attending – will also have access to the Wi-Fi in the media area, which Mr O’Shea says will have ‘mobile phone charging stations, outdoor tables and chairs and beanbags to relax’.
