Just like their Gear line of smartwatches, the Samsung IconX wireless earbuds may be about to get a Galaxy rebranding if a new trademark application in the European Union is any indication.

Samsung applied for a trademark on the name ‘Samsung Buds’ with the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) last week, leading to speculation that the company is looking to either launch a new product with the name, or possibly rebrand an existing product like the IconX.

The application doesn’t give away any details, leading some to speculate that we might see a new pair of truly wireless earbuds possibly with Bixby built-in. The Samsung Buds could also be an extension of the Bixby Virtual Assistant which Samsung is intending to broaden access to for third parties at their Developer Conference in San Francisco later this year, where we’ll also see more details about the Bixby-powered Galaxy Home smart speaker.

Samsung has a stake in the audio game with ownership of AKG, Harman Kardon and JBL, all noted audio-makers, so a more Samsung focused product launch would be a natural progression.

It’s also possible that Samsung is simply trademarking names and that nothing will come of this, but it’s there and something we’ll have to keep an eye out on.
