The phenomenon that is Fortnite is unparalleled for gamers, and after holding out initially, from today Sony has announced that players will be able to experience true cross-platform play with users on other platforms.
Sony is launching cross-platform play as an open Beta for PS4 users which will allow PS4 users to play Fortnite with other users on Android, iOS, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Microsoft Windows, and Mac operating systems says Sony Interactive Entertainment President & CEO John Kodera.
Fortnite players have been playing with users on other consoles and systems for some time but Sony was the lone hold out. Kodera says that the change to support cross-platform play is a ‘major policy change for SIE, and we are now in the planning process across the organisation to support this change’.
It seems that it won’t just be Fortnite players getting cross-platform play, with Kodera saying
Today, the communities around some games have evolved to the point where cross-platform experiences add significant value to players. In recognition of this, we have completed a thorough analysis of the business mechanics required to ensure that the PlayStation experience for our users remains intact today, and in the future, as we look to open up the platform.
This statement points to other games which benefit from interaction with players on other systems such as Minecraft also getting cross-platform play, with Kodera further saying they would supply ‘more specifics regarding the beta timeframe, and what this means for other titles going forward’.
This is a truly great day for PS4 users, so if you’ve been wanting to play Fortnite with your PS4 buddies, then you should be able to from today.
