Gaming in the browser is a big goal, especially when you’re talking about a graphically rich flagship game like Assassin’s Creed, but that’s exactly what Google is planning to do with Project Stream.
In a partnership with software developer Ubisoft, Google is beta testing the technology starting later this week on October 5th to a select group of users based in the US with a 25-megabit broadband connection. Google has tested the technology out starting with Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey, streaming the game at 1080p resolution at 60fps as shown in this demo.
The beta is supposed to push the limits of what Project Stream can do with AAA titles from top tier gaming companies.
For anyone keeping track, it’s also possible this is our first look at what Google could potentially do with their rumoured ‘Yeti’ gaming console. Reports that Google was working on a streaming gaming service codenamed ‘Yeti’ surfaced back in February, and this is likely our first look at what that rumour was all about.
Whether this is Yeti, or just a step on the road to releasing a new platform will be made clearer down the track, but being able to play top-tier games in your browser on any machine regardless of specs is a very attractive prospect.
