Huawei has had some great success with its Nova phones here in Australia, and the company is set to continue this with its new mid-range powerhouse, the Nova 4. Tonight in China, Huawei has announced the Nova 4 with the world’s smallest display hole for the front facing camera.
Huawei’s Nova phones have always had mid-range specs but this year looks to be different with the Nova 4 packing some serious power. It will be powered by the 12-month old 10nm Kirin 970 along with a decent 8GB of RAM and 128GB of onboard storage. The mid-range device specs are noticeable when you see the fingerprint sensor is located on the rear of the device and not the more premium in-display sensor we saw in the Mate 20 Pro.
Of course the star of the show was the tiny hole cutout that Huawei are using for the 25MP front-facing camera. The hole measures just 4.5mm and is punched into the top left corner of a 6.4-inch 2310 x 1080 IPS LCD display. With the tiny cut out the display to body ratio is an impressive 86.3%. Huawei was able to achieve the small hole thanks to a smaller camera aperture – also the smallest in the industry – measuring just 3.05mm in diameter.
With the lack of a bezel and/or notch the other sensors and speakers need to go somewhere. Huawei have hidden the earpiece in a micro-slot at the top edge of the device along with the indicator light. The proximity sensor has a “patented ejector design” which is also hidden at the top of the device, but is invisible to the eye.
Huawei’s introduction of the triple rear camera has also made its way into the mid-range with the main sensor a 48MP sensor and the other two 16MP and 2MP. There is a cheaper version which comes with a 20MP camera in place of the 48MP shooter.
The battery is a 3,750mAh capacity battery with support for Huawei’s 18W fast charging, so it is fair to say that Huawei have made a premium mid-range device.
While we may not be specifically getting this model in Australia there is no doubt that we will be seeing at least one variant here and we expect one of these to at least come close to matching these specs. The price is expected to be 3,099 Yuan, putting it at around the AU$620 — right in our mid-range.

Not long ago bought the Nova 3i, don’t regret it at all, amazing phone, if this is anything like the predecessor it will be a great piece of tech!
